ELLE Magazine
“From the get-go, Julien Labigne will quickly ensure that you have no clue what is going on. Try as you might to close off your brain, to cheat, he will end up guessing what he wants. ”
Le Pariscope
The Performer
A professional magician since the age of 20, Julien Labigne quickly made a name for himself participating in magic conventions and the most prestigious French festivals, including the Avignon Festival (2008), the International Animation Film Festival of Annecy (from 2000 to 2003), the National Magic Congresses in Nancy (2002) and Aix-les-Bains (2003), the International Magic Festival of Grenoble (2000 and 2003), the Festival "Juste pour rire" (Just for a Laugh) of Montreal (2005) and performing at many of the great Parisian performance halls (Folies Bergère, Théâtre du Splendid, Théâtre de la Renaissance, etc.).
Julien Labigne has created an original and personal artistic universe through unique, original compositions and the creation of magic effects mixing the principles of illusion and psychological subtleties.
An author and actor of theatrical performances with a degree in business management to boot, Julien Labigne is also the idea man behind magic tricks designed for business marketing and communication (including Accor, Air France, Hermès, L’Oréal, Mercedes-Benz, SNCF, Total, Microsoft, BNP Paribas and Publicis Group.)
In his role as artistic consultant for television, he is a regular guest on French and foreign channels television channels (TF1, France 2, France 3, M6 and TV5 Monde, TVA in Canada, Sky One in the UK and RTBF in Belgium) and collaborates with producers Tonie Marshall and Eric Besnard.
Finally, he is the author of a short guide to psychological illusions entitled Tricks and Mental Manipulation. Julien Labigne cleverly leads us to discover the main principles of persuasion, manipulation of perception, psychology, communication and magic through anecdotes and interactive experiences.
How do colors modify our perceptions? How do magicians divert our attention? How can you influence or decipher the thoughts of your interlocutor by simple observation? How can you develop a memory like an elephant? How can you beat Kasparov without knowing anything about chess? How can you foil a charlatan’s traps?
Program
Performance “Illusion-Psychology-Perception”
Length: 45 minutes
Public : 14 and up
Language : performance in French or in English
Workshop/workshops may be offered before the performance on the techniques behind some of the tricks.
Forget all the clichés you’ve heard about magic. In this performance, there are no multicolored scarves, no rabbits coming out of hats and no assistants in sequined g-strings skewered into a box. Julien provides an approach to magic that is different but no less memorable.
Using techniques borrowed from magic and psychology, he offers a well-paced and impressive performance, giving the illusion of playing with our behavior and perceptions. Although he categorically denies having any special powers at all, you can’t help but wonder…
With a sense of style and humor, Julien shows that he is seemingly capable of guessing the first name of your first girl/boy friend, knowing in which hand you will hide a coin each time, predicting the exact physical features and dress of someone randomly chosen among hundreds, or influencing an audience member so that s/he thinks precisely about a single song burned on a CD!
“Illusion-Psychology-Perception” has been performed more than a hundred times in theatrical (stage, festivals) and event (international groups) contexts.
The performance is totally interactive and involves the whole audience. Some audience members will have the experience of “reading” the thoughts of others in the room themselves!
