The Performer
As an unequaled mathematician and performer, Monica Neagoy knows perfectly how to bring together her two professional worlds, teaching and acting. After a brilliant course of study which earned her a degree in philosophy and then a doctorate in mathematics, she has worked as a consultant for schools and national and international organizations.
Shuttling back and forth between Asia and the United States, she has done consulting work for the International Commission on the Teaching of Mathematics, Intelsat, the International Mathematics Olympics and the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and became program director for the National Science Foundation in its education department.
For twenty years she has been one of the national judges for the prestigious Mathcounts Foundation. She teaches mathematics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and at the same time pursues her training as actress and director with the French and American theater company Le Néon.
She also lends her teaching expertise to television, working with both the Discovery Channel and Annenberg CPB as well as online video libraries such as the Teaching Company Media4Math.
Program
MathMagic is a math show that Professor Neagoy created by combining her passion for math and for the performing arts. Magic fascinates young and old alike. But behind all the conjuring there are always logical explanations. Beyond the supernatural and the marvelous are hidden mathematical rules.
Explanations for both children and adults of spatial sense, calculation, geometry, arithmetic, algebra and even probability are presented through interactive fun and games.
MathMagic has been a great success both in the U.S. and abroad, teaching and entertaining audiences from California to Georgia, as well as in France, the Czech Republic, and in Israel. Professor Neagoy proposes five different versions of her show, depending on audience age.
She has shows for both lower and upper elementary grades, middle school, high school and adults.
