Presentation

Jacques Muron studied drawing and engraving at the School of Beaux Arts in Toulouse from 1968 to 1973. In 1982, he was recipient of the Paul-Louis Weiller prize from the Academy of Beaux Arts in Paris, known as well as the Prix de Rome. From 1983 to 1985, he was a fellow in residence at the Medici Villa. His works, shown on a regular basis in different countries in the European Union, are part of many public and private collections.

While working close to Toulouse, Muron was inspired by the local architecture as well as by the industrial sites. But instead of drawing his subjects as they are, Muron adds a lyrical dimension to the ordinary with his abstract drawings of familiar objects and façades. By emphasizing the totemic qualities of objects of the everyday, the artist reveals a modern sensibility, expressed by the meticulous use of an old technique: engraving. Even if engraving isn’t something new, Muron approaches it differently: the surreal trio of bottle brushes (Aigrette, Crosse, & Volte-Face) show in the bristles and the twists of the metal handle a sensitivity to the potential of the engraver’s art that is exceedingly rare. Another distinctive work is “Mask,” a haunting portrait in which there’s a hint of a latent presence under a sinister and obsessively detailed fencing mask.

In September 1999, Fitch-Febvrel offered Muron his first solo show in the United States. In participation with the gallery, the Maison Française of New York University also presented an exhibit of his works. These two events gave Americans the opportunity to discover the engravings and the drawings of the artist.

In 2007-2008, Muron’s works will once again be on view for the North Americans, this time through the network Alliance Françaises.
