One, Two, Three: Jérôme Sabbagh Trio

Jérôme Sabbagh is a real find: a young tenor saxophone player whose play is resolutely lyrical in his personal approach and one who derives less inspiration from his artistic predecessors than he does from his own imagination.”
Jazz Times

“Mr. Sabbagh expresses himself with assurance and his compositions, sure and solid, are seductive. Important as well is the fact that the other two members of the group are always on the lookout for the new and unexpected, in terms of both personal play and that of the group as a whole. . . . Mr. Sabbagh avoids any direct allusion to the legendary figures of the sax. Rather, he develops a personal and sincere vocabulary both simply and efficiently.”

The performer

Saxophonist and composer, Jérôme Sabbagh was born in Paris in 1973 and moved to New York in 1995. It was while in the United States that he formed the group Flipside with guitarist Greg Tuohey, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Darren Beckett. They recorded an album by the same name for the Naxos Jazz label. Since then, Jérôme Sabbagh has written songs and is the leader of his own group, with which he has recorded three albums: Pogo, North and One Two Three. Jérome Sabbagh has performed with pianist Laurent Coq’s quartet and Guileermo Klein’s Los Gauchos.  He has also played with Jean-Michel Pilc and Magali Souriau.

He has participated in numerous festivals, such as the Newport Jazz Festival, the JVC Jazz Festival in Paris, the Marciac Jazz Festival, and jazz festivals is Belfast and Medellin, Colombia. He has performed on Radio France in Paris as well as in such legendary venues as Blues Alley, Jazz standard, Jazz Gallery, the Smalls, the Fat Cat, Bar 55 and Birdland in New York.
While Jérôme Sabbagh performs with several groups, it is with the trio that recorded One Two Three with him that real genius emerges.  He shows himself to be a master of jazz and its rich heritage, one that is both impressive and strong. Imagination, musical competence, and endurance are at their peak. One Two Three stays in the groove.

The album was recorded live and remains a diamond in the rough that underscores the fundamental ingredients of jazz: melody, rhythm, and harmonic improvisations, with which Jérôme Sabbagh develops his own expressive and authentic vocabulary.
