Milton Viorst

Born in 1930, Milton Viorst studied history at Rutgers University in New Jersey before traveling to France for the 1951-’52 academic year as a Fulbright scholar. He later went on to Harvard and Columbia, where he graduated in 1956 in journalism. From 1956 to 1993, Viorst often contributed in various ways to publications such as The New Yorker, Foreign Affairs, Harper’s, Atlantic, The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal. Milton Viorst has also taught journalism at Princeton and is a member of numerous professional associations like PEN, the National Writers Union, the Council of Foreign Relations, and also the Middle East Institute as a “senior scholar.”
In the early 1980s, he grew interested in Middle Eastern policy and became a specialist in this field, proven with the extensive list of his books on the subject: Sands of Sorrow : Israel’s Journey from Independence (Harper & Row, 1987), Reaching for the Olive Branch : UNRWA and the Palestinians (University of Indiana, 1989), Sandcastles: The Arabs in Search of the Modern World (Knopf, 1994), In the Shadow of the Prophet: The Struggle for the Soul of Islam (Anchor Doubleday, 1998) and What Shall I do with This People?: Jews and the Fractious Politics of Judaism (Simon and Schuster, 2002). Milton Viorst’s latest work, Storm From the East : The Struggle between the Arab World and the Christian West (Random House, 2006) will provide the subject matter for the lecture he will be giving.
Milton Viorst sits on a number of committees and organizations dedicated to a durable peace in the Middle East. He has been the recipient of many awards and distinctions, including the French Legion of Honor in 2005.
