Simon Serfaty

The Speaker

Simon Serfaty holds a senior professorship in international politics with the Graduate Programs in International Studies at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia. At ODU, he was also named an Eminent Scholar of the University, the only such nomination granted by the University in the College of Arts and Sciences. Serfaty is the first holder of the Zbigniew Brzezinski Chair in Security Studies and Geostrategy at the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS), a leading think tank in Washington, DC. He also remains a Senior Advisor to the Europe Program, which he directed from 1994 to 2004.

Previously, he taught at the University of California at Los Angeles and at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University. In 2004, the World Affairs Councils of America selected Serfaty for inclusion in the Council’s Foreign Policy 500, an annual directory of the 500 individuals deemed most influential in shaping U.S. foreign policy.

A naturalized U.S. citizen since 1965, Serfaty’s many books include Memories of Europe's Future: Farewell to Yesteryear, Stay the Course, and Taking Europe Seriously.
